Alex Klein, een virtuoos op de hobo, brengt met "Fantasies and Partitas" een meesterwerk van kamermuziek uit de barokperiode naar het hedendaagse publiek. Dit album, uitgebracht op 1 juni 1999 onder het label Soundset, biedt een rijke collectie van werken die oorspronkelijk geschreven zijn voor viool en dwarsfluit, maar briljant gearrangeerd zijn voor de hobo. Met een speeltijd van 1 uur en 12 minuten, laat Klein zijn technische vaardigheid en muzikale diepgang horen in een reeks van sonates, partitas en fantasieën.
Het album opent met een selectie uit de vioolsonates en -partita's van Johann Sebastian Bach, waaronder de bekende "Allemande" en "Prelude" uit de Partita's, evenals levendige stuks als "Allegro assai" en "Presto". Klein's interpretaties zijn zowel respectvol als vernieuwend, waarbij hij de diepte en complexiteit van Bach's muziek naar voren brengt.
De tweede helft van het album is gewijd aan de "12 Fantasias for Flute without Bass" van Georg Philipp Telemann. Deze werken, oorspronkelijk geschreven voor dwarsfluit, worden door Klein omgezet in een serie expressieve en dynamische stukken voor de hobo. Van de rustige "Dolce" tot de levendige "Spirituoso", Klein's speelstijl is zowel gevoelig als energiek, waardoor elk stuk tot leven komt.
Het album sluit af met een arrangement van de "Flute Partita in A Minor" van Bach, opnieuw getransformeerd voor de hobo. De "Allemande", "Corrente", "Sarabande" en "Bourée anglaise" worden door Klein gespeeld met een zeldzame combinatie van precisie en emotie.
"Fantasies and Partitas" is een album dat zowel liefhebbers van barokmuziek als die van hedendaagse kamermuziek zal boeien. Alex Klein's virtuositeit en muzikale inzicht maken dit album een onmisbaar onderdeel van elke klassieke muziekcollectie.
