Eugène Ysaÿe, geboren in 1858, was een Belgische virtuoze violist, componist en dirigent, wiens talenten hem de titel "De Koning van de Viool" opleverden. Ysaÿe begon al op jonge leeftijd met vioolspelen en studeerde af aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Luik. Zijn carrière bloeide snel, en hij werd bekend om zijn uitvoeringen van de werken van Franse en Belgische componisten. Naast zijn virtuositeit op de viool, was Ysaÿe ook een getalenteerd componist, hoewel hij zijn eigen compositorische vaardigheden soms onderschatte.
