Marcel Dupré, geboren in Rouen in 1886 en overleden in Meudon in 1971, was een buitengewone figuur in de wereld van de klassieke muziek. Als organist, improvisator, pedagoog en componist heeft hij een onuitwisbare stempel gedrukt op de muziekgeschiedenis. Dupré is vooral bekend om zijn virtuoze uitvoeringen van Bach en zijn eigen originele werken. Hij was organist van de beroemde Saint-Sulpice in Parijs en gaf les aan het Conservatoire de Paris, waar hij de orgelklas overnam van Charles-Marie Widor.

Dupré's carrière strekte zich uit over de hele wereld, met meer dan 800 concerten in tien tournées, waaronder optredens in Engeland, de Verenigde Staten en Australië. Zijn talent als improvisator was legendarisch; hij kon spontaan fugues en symfonieën improviseren op thema's die door het publiek werden voorgeschoteld.
