Over Gustav Mahler

Gustav Mahler, geboren op 7 juli 1860 in Kalište, Bohemen, was een invloedrijke Oostenrijkse componist en dirigent van de late 19e en vroege 20e eeuw. Zijn diepgaande symfonieën en liederen vormen een brug tussen de romantiek en de moderne muziek van de twintigste eeuw. Als componist fungeerde Mahler als een brug tussen de 19e-eeuwse Austro-Duitse traditie en de moderniteit van het begin van de 20e eeuw. Mahler's muziek, gekenmerkt door zijn emotionele diepgang en vooruitstrevende composities, werd tijdens zijn leven niet alom gewaardeerd. Zijn werk werd zelfs verboden in grote delen van Europa tijdens de nazi-tijd. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd Mahler's muziek herontdekt en is hij nu een van de meest uitgevoerde en opgenomen componisten ter wereld. Mahler's Joodse achtergrond speelde een belangrijke rol in zijn leven, vooral in een tijd waarin antisemitisme wijdverspreid was.
