Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was een Britse componist en dirigent van gemengde afkomst, wiens muziek de wereld veroverde aan het begin van de 20e eeuw. Geboren in Londen, werd Coleridge-Taylor al op jonge leeftijd bekend om zijn indrukwekkende composities, met name zijn drie cantates gebaseerd op het epische gedicht "The Song of Hiawatha" van Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Zijn talent en innovatieve stijl brachten hem de bijnaam "de Afrikaanse Mahler" op, vooral tijdens zijn succesvolle tours door de Verenigde Staten.
