Ernest Chausson, geboren op 20 januari 1855 in Parijs, was een getalenteerde Franse componist uit de romantische periode. Hoewel hij aanvankelijk rechten studeerde om zijn vader te voldoen, volgde hij zijn passie voor muziek en werd een van de meest respecteerde componisten van het late 19e-eeuwse Frankrijk. Zijn muziek, sterk beïnvloed door zijn leraar César Franck, staat bekend om zijn rijke atmosferen en diepgaande emoties. Chausson's relatief kleine oeuvre omvat voornamelijk kamermuziek, maar zijn composities worden hoog gewaardeerd om hun artistieke diepgang en technische vaardigheid. Zijn leven kwam tragisch ten einde op 44-jarige leeftijd toen hij bij een fietsongeluk omkwam.
