Over Gustave Charpentier
Gustave Charpentier (1860-1956) was een Franse componist die vooral bekend staat om zijn opera Louise. Geboren in Dieuze als zoon van een bakker, ontdekte Charpentier zijn muzikale talent al op jonge leeftijd. Na studies aan het Conservatoire in Lille en het prestigieuze Paris Conservatoire, waar hij onder andere les kreeg van de beroemde Jules Massenet, won hij in 1887 de Prix de Rome met zijn cantate Didon.
Charpentier's bekendste werk, Louise, is een opera die in 1900 in première ging aan de Opéra-Comique in Parijs. Deze opera, die vaak een "muzikale roman" wordt genoemd, vertelt een levendige en realistische verhaallijn over het leven van de arbeidersklasse in Parijs. De opera werd wereldwijd een groot succes en wordt nog steeds opgevoerd vanwege zijn levendige muziek en diepgaande emoties.
Naast zijn werk als componist richtte Charpentier in 1902 het Conservatoire Populaire de Mimi Pinson op, een gratis kunstschool voor werkende meisjes. Deze school was een uitvloeisel van zijn sociale betrokkenheid en zijn wens om kunst toegankelijk te maken voor een bredere groep mensen.
