Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) was een invloedrijke componist, dirigent en muziekpedagoog uit de late romantische periode, geboren in een muzikaal gezin in Dublin. Na zijn opleiding in Cambridge, Leipzig en Berlijn, droeg hij bij aan de opwaardeering van de Cambridge University Musical Society, waar hij internationale sterren aantrok voor optredens. Stanfords oeuvre omvat ongeveer 200 werken, waaronder zeven symfonieën, veertig koorwerken en negen opera's. Hij was een van de meest prominente componisten van Ierse afkomst voor de onafhankelijkheid en wordt herinnerd als een van de leidende musici van zijn generatie.
