Michael Nyman is een veelzijdige en invloedrijke Britse componist, pianist, librettist, musicoloog en filmmaker, geboren in Londen in 1944. Hij is wereldwijd bekend om zijn minimalistische filmmuziek, opera's en kamermuziek. Nyman's werk omvat talloze filmpartituren, waaronder de multi-platinum soundtrack voor Jane Campion's "The Piano", en opera's zoals "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat". Hij heeft ook zes concerti, vijf strijkkwartetten en vele andere kamermuziekwerken geschreven, vaak in samenwerking met zijn Michael Nyman Band.
