Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, geboren in 1895 in Florence en overleden in 1968 in Beverly Hills, was een buitengewone figuur in de muziekwereld van de twintigste eeuw. Als Italiaans componist, pianist en schrijver, staat hij bekend als een van de meest vooraanstaande gitaristen van zijn tijd, met bijna honderd composities voor dat instrument. Zijn muziek is beïnvloed door zijn Joods-Spaanse achtergrond en zijn vlucht voor de Inquisitie, wat zijn werk een unieke diepgang geeft.
