John Casken is een opvallende en hoog aangeschreven componist uit het noorden van Engeland. Geboren in Barnsley op 15 juli 1949, studeerde hij muziek aan de Universiteit van Birmingham, waar hij zich specialiseerde in compositie. Zijn muziek staat bekend om zijn harmonische en textuurrijke complexiteit, vaak aardig en fysiek, zonder zich te willen oplossen. Casken heeft een breed scala aan werken geschreven, variërend van kamermuziek tot grote orkestrale stukken, en van vocale en koormuziek tot opera. Hij werkte als Componist-in Association met Northern Sinfonia van 1990 tot 2001 en heeft samengewerkt met vele van de belangrijkste orkesten van het Verenigd Koninkrijk, waaronder het Hallé.
