Alfredo Casella, geboren in Turijn op 25 juli 1883, was een veelzijdig Italiaans kunstenaar die bekend stond als componist, pianist en dirigent. Zijn kosmopolitische blik veranderde de Italiaanse muziek in de 20e eeuw. Casella studeerde aan het Conservatorium van Parijs onder de vleugels van de beroemde Gabriel Fauré, wat zijn stijl en visie op muziek diepgaand beïnvloedde. Als een van de leidende figuren in de Italiaanse muziek tussen 1918 en 1939, componeerde hij werken zoals zijn Concerto voor Orkest uit 1937, speciaal geschreven voor het Concertgebouworkest van Amsterdam onder leiding van Willem Mengelberg.
