Als zoon van Johann Stamitz, de stichter van de Mannheimse School, groeide Carl op in een muzikale omgeving en kreeg hij zijn opleiding van zijn vader en diens opvolgers. Stamitz staat bekend als de meest opvallende vertegenwoordiger van de tweede generatie van de Mannheimse School, een groep componisten die bekend staat om hun innovatieve symfonieën en instrumentale werken.
