George Frederick Bristow was een Amerikaanse componist, dirigent, violist en muziekpedagoog, geboren in Brooklyn, New York. Hij was een voorvechter van de Amerikaanse klassieke muziek in een tijd waarin Europese componisten de Amerikaanse concertzalen domineerden. Bristow's omvangrijk oeuvre omvat vijf symfonieën, twee opera's, oratoria, koorwerken en kamermuziek. Zijn Vijfde Symfonie, getiteld Niagara, werd in januari 1898 in première gebracht in Carnegie Hall, slechts enkele maanden voor zijn overlijden. Bristow was ook betrokken bij een openbaar conflict met criticus William Henry Fry en de New York Philharmonic Society, waarbij hij hun uitsluiting van Amerikaanse componisten bekritiseerde.
