Brett Dean is een veelzijdig Australisch kunstenaar die bekend staat als componist, altviolist en dirigent. Geboren op 23 oktober 1961, begon Dean zijn muzikale reis in Australië voordat hij in 1984 naar Duitsland vertrok om lid te worden van het beroemde Berliner Philharmoniker, waar hij veertien jaar als altviolist speelde. Naast zijn carrière als uitvoerend musicus, begon Dean in 1988 met componeren, met een focus op experimentele film- en radioprojecten. Zijn werk omvat voornamelijk kamermuziek, en hij staat bekend om zijn natuurlijke aanleg voor kamermuziek, vaak samenwerkend met andere solisten en ensembles. Dean is een veelgevraagd gastdocent aan de Royal Academy of Music en wordt vertegenwoordigd door Intermusica en Boosey & Hawkes.
