Leonard Joseph Rose, geboren in 1918 in Washington D.C., was een Amerikaanse cellist en pedagoge van wereldklasse. Zijn ouders, Joodse immigranten uit Belarus en Oekraïne, vluchtten voor pogroms en vestigden zich uiteindelijk in Miami, waar Rose zijn eerste serieuze cello-onderricht kreeg van Walter Grossman. Rose's carrière is een voorbeeld van de Amerikaanse droom: op jonge leeftijd werd hij al sectioncellist van het NBC Symphony Orchestra en later principal cellist van The Cleveland Orchestra en het New York Philharmonic. Als solist en kamermusicus werkte hij samen met grote namen zoals Isaac Stern en Eugene Istomin, en zijn diepe, goudbruine toon en natuurlijke linkshandtechniek maakten hem wereldberoemd. Naast zijn solocarrière was Rose ook een begenadigd leraar, die vele beroemde studenten onder zijn vleugels nam, waaronder Yo-Yo Ma.
