Ernest Bloch, geboren in Genève in 1880, was een Zwitsers-Amerikaanse componist van Joodse afkomst die een blijvende indruk heeft achtergelaten in de muziekwereld. Zijn werken, vaak getint met een melancholische toon, reflecteren zijn diepe verbondenheid met zijn Joodse erfgoed. Een van zijn meest beroemde composities is "Prayer," een stuk dat vaak wordt geprezen als een van de mooiste ooit geschreven voor cello.
