Franz Waxman, geboren als Franz Wachsmann, was een invloedrijke componist en dirigent van Duitse-Joodse afkomst die vooral bekend werd om zijn bijdragen aan de filmmuziek. Geboren in 1906, vluchtte hij in 1934 naar de Verenigde Staten om te ontkomen aan de nazi's. Zijn carrière omvatte indrukwekkende scores voor klassiekers zoals "Bride of Frankenstein," "Rebecca," en "Sunset Boulevard." Waxman ontving twaalf Academy Award-nominaties en won er twee op rij in 1950 en 1951. Zijn werk "Carmen Fantasie" uit 1946 is een hoogtepunt in zijn oeuvre. Daarnaast werd zijn score voor "Taras Bulba" door collega-componist Bernard Herrmann geprezen als "the score of a lifetime."
