Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) was een veelzijdig Italiaans genie die zich uitstekend kon bewegen in de wereld van muziek, literatuur en recht. Geboren in Venetië, toonde Marcello al op jonge leeftijd zijn talenten als dichter, schrijver, musicus, advocaat en rechter. Zijn meest bekende werk is "Estro poetico armonico," een verzameling van vijftig psalmen die zijn poëtische en muzikale vaardigheden perfect combineren. Marcello's muziek, variërend van cantates tot sonates, straalt een diepe emotionele diepte en technische meeslependheid uit. Naast zijn muzikale carrière diende Marcello als thesaurier in Brescia, waar hij in 1739 overleed.
