Arnold Bax, geboren in 1883 in Streatham, Londen, was een vooraanstaand Engelse componist, pianist en dichter wiens muziek een belangrijke rol speelt in de neoromantische stroming tussen de twee wereldoorlogen. Bax studeerde piano aan de Royal Academy of Music in Londen en werd sterk beïnvloed door zijn bezoek aan Rusland in 1910. Zijn omvangrijke oeuvre omvat liedjes, koormuziek, kamermuziek, solo pianowerken en orkestrale composities, waaronder een reeks symfonische gedichten en zeven symfonieën.
