Kirill Kondrashin, geboren in Moskou in 1914, was een van de meest briljante Russische dirigenten van de 20e eeuw. Als zoon van een violistenechtpaar begon hij op jonge leeftijd met pianoles, maar zijn ware passie voor muziek ontdekte hij later. Kondrashin staat bekend om zijn diepgaande interpretaties van werken van Shostakovich en Prokofiev, en zijn dirigententalent werd al snel erkend, wat resulteerde in de titel 'Volksartiest van de USSR' in 1972. Tot 1978 werkte hij in Rusland, waar hij chef-dirigent was van het Philharmonisch Orkest van Moskou. Zijn optredens, zoals die met het Concertgebouworkest in 1975, bleven onvergetelijk.
