Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) was een Duitse cellovirtuoos en componist wiens talenten hem over de hele wereld brachten. Als solist ondernam hij vele tournees en breidde zijn bekendheid uit, vooral na zijn studies aan het Parijse conservatorium. Hoewel zijn naam vandaag de dag minder bekend is, geniet hij onder cellisten nog steeds grote waardering. Romberg bracht belangrijke veranderingen aan in de cellotechniek en zijn composities, zoals zijn sonates voor cello en piano, zijn nog steeds een inspiratiebron voor musici. Zijn werk werd onder andere bewerkt door Friedrich Grützmacher, wat zijn invloed op de muziekgeschiedenis benadrukt. Romberg was ook de neef van de eveneens bekende componist Andreas Jakob Romberg.
