Alexander Glazunov, geboren op 10 augustus 1865 in Sint-Petersburg, was een uitstekend Russisch componist, dirigent en muziekleraar van de late romantische periode. Zijn vader was uitgever en zijn moeder pianiste, wat zijn muzikale talent al vroeg stimuleerde. Glazunov staat bekend om zijn conservatieve, klassieke composities en was een van de belangrijkste symfonische componisten van de generatie na Tchaikovsky. Hij was directeur van het Sint-Petersburg Conservatorium van 1905 tot 1930 en speelde een cruciale rol in de reorganisatie van het instituut na de Bolsjewistische Revolutie.
