Bohuslav Martinů, geboren op 8 december 1890 in Polička, Tsjechië, is een van de meest invloedrijke Tsjechische componisten van de 20e eeuw. Samen met Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák en Leoš Janáček behoort hij tot de meest gespeelde Tsjechische componisten. Martinů's muziek omvat een breed scala aan genres, met een sterke focus op kamermuziek en neoclassicisme.

Geboren in een familie van torenwachters, begon Martinů al op jonge leeftijd met muziek. Op zesjarige leeftijd leerde hij viool spelen en op vijftienjarige leeftijd trad hij al op in lokale evenementen.
