Hugo Emil Alfvén (1872-1960) was een van de meest invloedrijke Zweedse componisten van zijn tijd, bekend om zijn late romantische stijl en zijn meeslepende orkestrale werken. Geboren in Stockholm, studeerde Alfvén aan het Kungliga Musikhögskolan en reisde uitgebreid door Europa om zijn vaardigheden verder te ontwikkelen. Als veelzijdig kunstenaar was hij niet alleen componist, maar ook dirigent, violist en schilder. Zijn oeuvre omvat vijf symfonieën, drie Zweedse Rhapsodieën en tal van orkestrale en koorwerken. Alfvén's "Swedish Rhapsody" blijft een van de meest herkenbare stukken Zweedse muziek. Zijn uitgebreide muzikale archief wordt bewaard in de Universiteit van Uppsala, waar hij gedurende 29 jaar muziekdirecteur was.
