"De Gospel According to the Other Mary" van John Adams is een meeslepende en indrukwekkende opera-oratorium die de laatste weken van het leven van Jezus vanuit een uniek perspectief belicht. Dit werk, dat in 2012 in première ging onder leiding van Gustavo Dudamel en het Los Angeles Philharmonic, is een diepgaande en innovatieve interpretatie van de traditionele Passieverhalen. Adams, bekend om zijn minimalistische en avant-gardistische stijl, brengt een frisse en moderne kijk op de oude verhalen, waarbij hij samenwerkt met regisseur Peter Sellars voor een libretto dat zowel tijdloos als relevant is.
Het album, dat in 2014 werd uitgebracht bij Deutsche Grammophon, duurt ruim twee uur en biedt een rijke mix van orkestrale, koor- en solozang. Met een tracklist die uit 37 nummers bestaat, volgt het werk een structuur die zowel dramatisch als spiritueel is, met scènes die variëren van de gevangenis en de huis van gastvrijheid tot de kruisiging en de opstanding.
